Oxbridge places by lottery? A new proposal.
"Social Mobility And Its Enemies" by Lee Elliott Major (Chief Executive of The Sutton Trust) and Stephen Machin (Professor of Economics at LSE) is published by Pelican today (£8.99). The "Times Higher Education" today highlights the authors' suggestion that places at universities such as Oxford or Cambridge should be allocated by lottery from a pool of applicants considered to have passed an appropriate academic threshold. The authors argue that this would sweep aside the unfair advantages enjoyed by students who have been to elite schools and who have received more coaching through the application process.
